during my last semester of studying visual communication design, i was challenged to create a publication page inspired by the theme of 'wayfinding' and being a student.
at first, i was considering writing a piece about design trends and why we are drawn to the things we are. i wanted to avoid the personal, and more importantly the fear of graduating. my peers encouraged me to go where i was uncomfortable and that is exactly where 'leap' takes place.
the piece, written and designed by myself is about taking leaps of faith through different periods of your life. i photographed the photo of the barbie on a diving board. i wanted there to be a sense of humor and youth to the piece, as the story begins when i was a child. however, the point is that regardless of how old you are, opportunities for leaps come; it is up to you to jump.
the type and color are callbacks to what was girlhood in the early 2000's, when i was a child. barbie represents a double-edged sword as embracing girlhood and femininity is amazing. however, the idea of perfection that barbie also represents, especially on first tries, clouded and continues to cloud my vision.
to take this photo, i sought out a diving board barbie(they recently made a new one!). in the corner of my room, i set up a hot pink piece of fabric, and the diving board on top of it. barbie is being strung to the corner of the walls on three sides. unlike me, barbie had no intentions of taking the actual leap.
