creating a visual identity begins with a firm understanding of what one wants to communicate. working on a visual identity for south end of burlington, vt began with a trip to the local coffee shop to write about my experiences. spending hours in the south end of burlington, i created a list of over one hundred words to describe how it felt. finally, i came to a conclusion that the south end felt 'offkilter'.
this magazine spread copy i found while attending champlain college is sourced from sarah harrington, a realtor in the area.
i find i love traveling the best when i am enjoying amazing food, and walking from spot to spot. going off if this, i used an article about the many food spots located in the south end. the color and forms are placed seemingly haphazardly to showcase the casual and 'offkilter' nature of the area. this would be placed in restaurants around town giving information on a casual food tour of the area.
for folks who proudly live, have lived or enjoy the south end of burlington, i created a poster. this alice-in-wonderland-esque piece works well for the younger college-aged burlington crowd that may not want to tour restaurants. the color shows that the south end is a place to have fun, while the balance and rhythm of the piece shows that you can not plan what that fun is.
